A high level Indian parliamentary delegation will pay an official visit to Russia under the leadership of Mrs. Sumitra Mahajan, Honourable Speaker of the Lower House of the Indian Parliament, Lok Sabha, from July 10-13, 2017. The delegation consists of Members of Parliament from both Lok Sabha (Lower House) and Rajya Sabha ( Upper House).
The Indian Speaker will have meetings with the Chairman of the State Duma His Excellency Mr. Vyacheslav Volodin, Chairman of the Federation Council Her Excellency Ms. Valentina Matviyenko and Heads of the different factions of the State Duma. She will also address the State Duma. The Indian Parliamentary delegation will attend the Fourth Meeting of the India-Russia Parliamentary Commission. The Third Meeting was held in India in February 2015.
The visit of the Lok Sabha Speaker takes place shortly after the successful visit of the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi to Russia on June 1-2, 2017 and represents the continuation of high level contacts between the two countries.
The two sides are expected to discuss further strengthening of cooperation between their respective Parliaments and Legislative bodies within the framework of their Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership, enhancing of trade, economic and cultural cooperation bilaterally and within BRICS, SCO, and the Eurasian Economic Union, and role of parliamentarians in enhancing regional peace and stability, especially in the fight against international terrorism.
The visit of the Lok Sabha Speaker has special significance as it takes place during the 70th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations between India and Russia.
