The President of India, Mr. Pranab Mukherjee congratulates the President of the Russian Federation, H. E. Mr. Vladimir Putin on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations between India and Russia on 13 April 2017.

It gives me great pleasure to greet you on the historic occasion of the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between India and Russia. The journey that commenced on 13 April 1947, four months before India achieved independence, continues on the solid foundation that has been built and nurtured by successive governments and leaders of our two countries.

I have personally been associated with the bilateral relationship between India-Russia over many decades and have witnessed the growing strength of our fruitful cooperation. Ours is a relationship that reflects the aspirations of both our peoples and enjoys all round support in India. Russia has been a key partner in India’s quest to overcome the deprivations of colonial rule, transform our economy and society, and secure our country. Russia has been a true friend who has stood by our people in times of need.

Today, India-Russia relations have acquired a strategic dimension and significance. We have been sensitive and supportive to each other’s national interests and concerns. We have similar views on major global issues and our relations are a factor for peace and stability in the world.

Our Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership covers all areas of our shared interest. We are presently engaged in further strengthening and expanding our partnership in new sectors. There are many complementarities between our economies. India is a country with a young and dynamic population, a large market and a rapidly growing economy. Russia is an advanced economy with high technological and scientific capabilities and abundant natural resources. As we mark the 70th anniversary of our friendship, it is an occasion for both sides to build on our respective strengths and elevate our cooperation to a new level.

I once again wish Your Excellency and the friendly people of Russia peace, prosperity and happiness and reiterate India’s commitment to further strengthening our partnership.
