Indian Ambassador to Moscow Bala Venkatesh Varma said that his country's authorities were ready to lift the embargo on the supply of a drug for the treatment of coronavirus infection to Russia.

Earlier, Indian authorities imposed a ban on the export of the antimalarial drug hydroxychloroquine, but after a few hours the embargo was partially lifted. It was reported that the country was ready to continue working within its obligations to help combat the coronavirus pandemic and deliver the drug to neighboring countries dependent on supplies from Indian. It was also noted that it was planned to accept export permits for each individual case.

As Kommersant noted, the decision to partially lift the ban was made after the embargo was criticized by US President Donald Trump, who promised "retaliation" for refusing to deliver an already-paid shipment of the drug to the United States.

According to the Ambassador, India has its own need for medicine, however the export issue is “humanitarian”, that’s why the country will continue to “support our close friends.” The diplomat said that Moscow addressed Delhi with the corresponding request.
